You might have noticed my attempt to go live this afternoon from the Burlington, Vermont, “Sea Caves” in the city’s Intervale. Substack just made this live feature available for everyone, today. I figured, why not try it out? It didn’t go well. Evidently, I had very little signal down there. Apologies for the false alarm.
Here’s some unedited, uncut footage from the visit to make up for it.
I wasn’t visiting the Sea Caves to go LIVE — that was more an impromptu experiment than something planned. My purpose was shooting new footage, and seeing the Sea Caves again, after a bit of a break. I will have more to share from today’s visit.
The location is somewhat unique, in that you can’t always reach the site easily. It’s on the swampy, marshy edge of a pond in the Intervale, among the cattails. But — when the pond freezes —you can walk right up to the place.
Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront announced on their socials last week that the pond was frozen solid, and cleared — and cleared off — for public skating, and that the cave was accessible. Local news outlets picked up the story. In fact, the local NBC affiliate recycled footage from a 2021 piece they’d done where they’d interviewed me about the Sea Caves.
It was good to know the pond was frozen, but it was too much publicity! Well, too much for me to go down and shoot photos and videos of the Sea Caves. Maybe I’m being selfish. I tried to go during the weekend, but the ponds and parking areas were full of families and folks skating. I turned around and went home. The snow was certainly packed down and well-trodden when I was finally able to make it down there earlier today.
This footage was my first approach and entry into the caverns. The Sea Cave said “hello” by dropping a chunk of icicles off the right side wall as I was shooting video. Pretty nice coincidence!
Enjoy this first look. More to come.
